The Town of Bristol provides owners with information on how to register their business at the Federal, State, and Local level.
Apply for an Employer Identification Number (EIN)
A federal employer identification number, or EIN, is a nine-digit number that the IRS assigns to businesses for tax filing and reporting purposes. Most business structures require an EIN.
Get a Duns Number
The Data Universal Numbering System (DUNS) Number is a unique nine-digit identifier for businesses. While voluntary, this number allows a company to search for information about other companies and helps businesses find potential customers, partners, or vendors.
Registering for a DUNS number is voluntary. However, the identifier is necessary to bid on local, state, or government contracts and apply for federal grants or other credit with a lender.
Register with the State
The Secretary of State website manages a web application assistant to advise business owners on applicable Rhode Island registration requirements.
Register for State Taxes
The State of Rhode Island Division of Taxation provides information on applicable business taxes in Rhode Island, including an online form to register your business.
Register a Business Locally
Prospective business owners who plan to set up a Sole-Proprietorship or General Partnership can do so at the Bristol Town Clerk’s Office. Trade Name Certificates can be obtained through the Bristol Town Clerk’s Office.
Register for Local Taxes
The Town of Bristol’s Tax Assessment Department collects taxes on real estate and tangible assets. For more information about the tax rate and payment information, please contact Michelle DiMeo, Tax Assessor.
